LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (
UPPCL) on Friday claimed of supplying 11,640 Mw of power to the state on Diwali (October 26, 2011). The corporation claimed that this was the highest quantum of power it ever provided to the state, which invariably faces recurrent power crisis. Last year, the power supply to the state on the occasion of Diwali hovered in the range of around 10,640 Mw.
In the past few years, the power woes had turned critical following coal crisis that had arisen following strike of employees of Coal India Limited (CIL). Not only the state but also the central units, essentially those owned by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), have been facing shortage of coal which resulted in dipping of power production.
Chairman-cum-managing director, UPPCL, Navneet Sehgal said that besides increasing the power generation of its own resources, the corporation also power arranged from the exchange. Sources said that the state also resorted to overdrawal from the central grid on the day, when the demand went up spiralling. Sehgal said that the corporation provided uninterrupted power supply to the state between 6.00 pm of Wednesday and 6.00 am of Thursday. He said, "On the day, the state's own power generation touched a figure of 3,000 Mw, which was relatively better than other days. This came up following higher generation from Anpara-C and Harduaganj power plants."
